In 1933, the first Nazi concentration camp was opened near Dachau, initially for political prisoners but soon became the model for all camps and an SS training center, the “school of violence.” Over twelve years, Dachau expanded to nearly 100 sub-camps, imprisoning over 200,000 people from across Europe, with about 41,500 killed. U.S. forces liberated the camp on April 29, 1945, exposing the brutality of Nazi Germany. In 1965, survivors initiated the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial on the original site. Today, around 800,000 visitors come each year. Located 12 miles (20 km) northwest of Munich, guided tours from Munich lead visitors through this historic memorial, preserving the memory of one of history’s darkest chapters.
